It’s Thanksgiving today here in Canada, and we’ve been having ourselves a nice quiet weekend along with some low-key celebrations. In true Thanksgiving tradition, pretty much everything I’ve eaten today is conducive to putting me to sleep: turkey, potatoes, pie.. Everything except for the coffee. Although on a day-to-day basis, we eat pretty healthy, there are no holiday cooking rules other than just making whatever it is we feel like. So that’s how you end up with a turkey, mashed potatoes, sugary cranberry sauce that you forget to serve and paleo stuffing that you made because you just really like how it tastes.
Speaking of stuffing, as the Acadian was prepping the bird for the oven, I realized how I am so not over my poultry aversion. Ok, I never really thought I was. That’s why it’s so hard on me when he chases me with turkey innards and dares me to drink the raw turkey juice left over in the wrapper. For a whole buck. I don’t know why he thinks I would do it for a dollar. I always ask him why he doesn’t offer me at least five. I still wouldn’t do it for five. Or ten. Or a million. Yes, I know we’re the parents in this house. I don’t care.
The rest of our dinner preparations were a lot less gross though! I quickly realized as I was making pie crust that this is the year where Dee is starting to be interested in what’s happening in the kitchen. I’m trying to teach her how to sit on a chair at the counter to watch what I’m doing, and she’s pretty excited about that! When she started grabbing at the dough, I decided to set her up with her own – some flour mixed with water – and she was thrilled. It was messy but I think that’s the basic result of any toddler + food equation. She got even more excited later when we let her help lick the bowl with the sugary syrup stuff I made for the pie filling. Yeah, that was a bad move. It was like sugar explosions were happening inside her head, and apparently those make you run around in circles and get super possessive about your Little People farm animals. It was a total barnyard meltdown.
Of course, since we had friends join us for our big dinner last night, if was a prime occasion to get the girls dressed up in adorable dresses. It was also prime time for me to forget to take a photo, but trust me, everyone was extra cute, the Acadian wore a shirt with buttons and I wore a dress too. This is the height of fancy at our house!
So to make up for yesterday’s lack of photos, we snapped a few this afternoon. Of course, I made sure to dress extra snazzy for the occasion in my stretched out maternity leggings. How long am I allowed to hold on to those anyway? They’re so comfy and really, they are kind of the perfect attire for Thanksgiving…. Ahem. Three. Pieces. Of Pie… Today. Cough.
So if you are celebrating Thanksgiving today, a big Happy Turkey Day to you! And especially to our families who are both so far away. We miss all of you guys so much.
